Writing exercise! A few years ago, a creative writing professor gave my class an assignment based off of a poem we read. We had to write a poem about how we are made up of different fronts (personalities). Some people may have a wild front yet have a hidden nerdy front. Whatever the sides you wish to compare. I remember I had fun writing this and enjoyed the self-discovery.
The One I Call Kat
The other one, the one I call Kat, is fun.
She prances in costumes, fake lashes sparkling,
entertaining the crowds with her song and dance.
I, though, prefer a quiet book,
its pages folding me into their world.
Kat thrives in the spotlight,
her name glowing on scoreboards,
shotgun, three hundred rounds in two hours.
I shudder at the thought,
content to be the scorekeeper.
I know when to put the donuts back,
but she’ll sneak one, sharing the rest with friends.
Kat drinks her Crown sour after work;
I’m the one who cuts her off at two.
Kat has lots of friends,
her circle buzzing with life.
I have three, steadfast and true,
a refuge for the hard times.
Today, it is I who writes,
weaving a story from shadows.
But this story is Kat’s,
the bold, the fierce,
the one who steps into the light
when I’d rather stay behind.
